Where Do Funky Buddha Yoga Teachers Come From?

By Teacher Training, Uncategorized

With the recent announcement of our new Studio Park (Downtown Grand Rapids) Funky Buddha location, we have gotten a lot of inquiries about how our Funky Buddha teachers are hired/trained.

[nectar_dropcap color=”#ff4629″]W [/nectar_dropcap]

here Do Funky Buddha Yoga Teachers Come From?

What an excellent question! Where do the amazing Funky Buddha Yoga Teachers come from?!?!? A magical garden of yoga-awesome? Well….kinda…..if by magical garden you mean a magical training program of passion, dedication, commitment, and amazing work ethic!

Where Funky Buddha Yoga Teachers Come From (the quick answer):

The Funky Buddha teachers are an elite group of highly-trained ultra-committed yoga teaching ROCKSTARS. They are trained via the Funky Buddha’s one-of-a-kind Teacher Mentorship Program that is unlike any other training program in the yoga industry.

What IS the Funky Buddha Teacher Mentorship Program?

The Funky Buddha Mentorship Program is a rigorous training program that prepares candidates to work in specifically in the world of Funky Buddha Yoga.

The Funky Buddha Mentees are selected through a vigorous interview and application process and are selected based on a wide variety of factors including, but not limited to: coachability, cultural fit, communication skills, & current staff dynamics.

Those selected to participate in the FB Mentorship Program will train in a small cohort (2-6 people) for 9-12 months in anticipation of a future career as a Funky Buddha Yoga Teacher.

More FB Mentorship Details (for those of you that are interested):

Program Prerequisites:

Completion of the Funky Buddha 200-Hour Teacher Training. This training is fully compliant with Yoga Alliance’s (the national governing body of professional yoga) standards for 200-Hour RYT certification. Completion of another quality Yoga Alliance Certified 200-Hour Program. More details about our next 200-Hour Teacher Training in August can be found HERE.

FB Mentorship Time Commitment:

The beauty of the FB Mentorship Program is that it is customized to each participant. While every individual Mentee and Mentorship class is different, generally mentees will train for 9-12 months before being offered a staff position at the Funky Buddha.

We like to compare the FB Mentorship to going to grad school – in terms of weekly time commitment. Each week, mentees will be required to complete 6-10 hours of structured in-studio training (contact hours). Additionally, participants should expect to commit another 8-12 hours of additional “brain space” (this includes things like home practice, reading, studying, practicing, various other homework).

Employment at the Funky Buddha:

While an employment offer is not guaranteed, FB Mentorship participants are selected with the express purpose of eventual employment at the Funky Buddha. We are proud to report an EXTREMELY high rate of hire from our Mentorship Program.

Why Mentorship? Why is a 200-Hour Certification Not Enough?

The Funky Buddha Mentorship Program is a program unique to the Funky Buddha. It is time intensive and requires incredible investment and commitment from both sides of the relationship (the trainers and the mentees). So why?!?!?

A quality 200-Hour Training Program is a wonderful and necessary first step on yogi’s journey to becoming a teacher. However, it is our belief that 200-Hours simply is not enough time to become proficient and comfortable in a new professional field – any field, including yoga.

The Funky Buddha Mentorship is designed to build upon the foundation of a quality 200-Hour program. Through strategic and guided practice, the FB Mentorship program will provide the skills necessary to becoming a confident, effective, agile, and skilled yoga teacher. Additionally, it focuses on the cultural and systematic structures that are specific to working in a Funky Buddha Studio.

Ever wonder why our Funky Buddha teachers are so consistently AH-MAZING?! Well, they ALL are working through or have been through the Funky Buddha Mentorship program…….AND the training doesn’t stop there. Our staff teachers are all engaged in continuous training and education. Each teacher is working on a customized curriculum of continuing education. At the Funky Buddha we live, eat, breathe, and sleep our mission: Growth Through Practice.

So, whether you are one of our amazing students that was just curious about what happens behind the scenes with our amazing teaching staff, or if you have been casually or seriously been considering a future that includes teaching yoga – we hope that this post has been helpful in providing information and context.

Think you have it what it takes to become a Funky Buddha Yoga Teacher?

If you have any additional questions about either our Funky Buddha 200-Hour Teacher Training or the Funky Buddha Mentorship Program, feel free to reach out to Michele, our Director of Operations (michele@yogahothouse.com). She would love to get you more info.

Yoga on friends! See you on your mat.

4 Benefits of Yoga

By Healthy Living, Hot Yoga, Uncategorized, Yoga

Everyone loves their yoga pants, but does everyone actually DO yoga in their yoga pants? And if not – why? Cause yoga is AMAZING!!

Comfy pants aside, yoga is a uniquely holistic movement experience, and therefore, offers an amazingly broad set of benefits.

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘yuji,’ which means “union.” Appropriately, the practice is the union of physical movement, controlled breath, and disciplines of mindset. This combination of elements makes a regular yoga practice fertile ground for a wide array of benefits. Here are a few of our favorites.

The Physical Stuff:

We all know that movement is good for us. Any time we get off the couch or away from our desks and move our butts – Healthy Lifestyle, PLUS ONE. Sedentary Couch Potato, ZERO. There are a lot of different types of yoga. For more info on the various forms go HERE. Funky Buddha Yoga (hot power vinyasa), in particular, is an athletic form of yoga that provides a unique combo of STRENGTH + FLEXIBILITY. The “vinyasa” part of Hot Power Vinyasa refers to the fact that it is a moving form – we flow from one pose to another. This movement between static poses is particularly beneficial, as it mimics the functional movement that occurs in everyday life. If you are going to spend time getting stronger, why not get stronger in ways that help you in everyday movement? Sounds like a good plan, eh? We think so too.

Sweat:

At the Funky Buddha we like our yoga HOT. 95 degrees hot. There are a lot of reasons that we like a heated practice, but the one we like the most is the SWEAT. Getting sweaty is good for you. It increases heart rate, which increases blood flow, which moves lymph, which increases our body’s natural ability to detoxify itself. Regular sweating makes our body more responsive to changes the environment and increases our body’s ability to regulate temperature. Regular sweating helps to keep our skin and hair in a naturally good moisture balance. Oh, the benefits they just keep on coming!

Social Solitude:

With the pace of modern life – the hustle, the constant attachment to our phones, the barrage of media, ALL the things – there has never been a time when people have been more simultaneously desperately in need of genuine community connection AND starved for meaningful individual solitude. While these two ideas seem diametrically opposed, a yoga class offers a place where people can achieve BOTH in one experience. A regular yoga practice offers scheduled time with other like-minded-self-care-focused humans, and yet, your yoga mat and your physical practice is all your own – a little rectangle of solitude in the warmth (both literally & figuratively) of community.

Transferable Skills:

The ability to use breath control to affect one’s physiology (ex: heart rate, blood pressure, hormone release) is one of the most important skills of meditation and biofeedback. A consistent yoga practice offers a unique opportunity to regularly practice these skills in a non-stressful environment. A regular 60-minute yoga class offers the opportunity for 60 FULL minutes of mindful breathing. When else during your day would you practice controlled breathing for 60 minutes???

Here is the SUPER great news. With enough practice (in yoga class), those skills of physiological control can be called upon when you really need them – in times of stress, anger, anxiety, depression, etc.

  • Some dufus texting while driving cuts you off in traffic? As you feel the anger warming your body, a few deep breaths can actually CHANGE YOUR STRESS RESPONSE
  • Overwhelm at work making it difficult to make a decision? A couple minutes of quiet mindful breathing can reduce your cortisol levels and OXYGENATE your brain.
  • So frustrated that you are about to lose your mind in an important meeting? A little internal self-talk and focusing on lengthening your exhales can get you BACK IN CONTROL.

We could spend all day listing the far-reaching benefits that a regular yoga practice can bring to your life, but the truth is that you need to dip a toe into the pool and give it a try for YOURSELF to really appreciate what yoga can bring to your life. Hopefully this little list has at least piqued your interest. Give it a try! See you on your mat.

Funky Feature: Chris W.

By Uncategorized

When we were looking for a student to feature in this month’s newsletter, Chris’ name came up several times – evidence of how he positively impacts Funky Buddha Community Culture.

Chris exemplifies what it means to be a Funky Buddha — committed + curious + always learning.

Yoga for Chris comes down to one word, “Health.”

“For me it is a mind and body connection. It not only works on your body, your strength, your flexibility, but it also works on your mind. If you’re stressed or working on some tough stuff, ten minutes after class I feel at peace.”

Chris looks at his yoga practice as a commitment to his own health. This is what keeps him coming back to his mat.

Chris was an active athlete in high school and college. He used yoga for recovery during those years of weight lifting and sports.

“(Yoga) provides all of the benefits of exercise and not nearly as many drawbacks.” – Chris

While visiting Grand Rapids (before it became his home), Chris Googled “Yoga in Grand Rapids.” He took his very first class at Funky Buddha, in November of 2018, and from there he was hooked.

Though he practiced yoga in the past, Funky Buddha Yoga was a new adventure for him. He had never practiced HOT yoga before. But ever the adventurer, the 95-degree room did not dissuade him.

While he has only practiced at the Funky Buddha since November, Chris has thrown himself into his yoga practice and the Funky Buddha Community. He has been to all of the workshops, the community music project classes, and every class we offer in the winter – even sometimes hitting two classes in a day.

Reasons Why Chris Loves His Funky Buddha Yoga Practice:

  • “The quality of instruction creates for a deeper understanding of my practice. I know if I were to ask a question about my yoga practice, I would receive a competent and well-thought-out answer. You guys are always willing to help, with anything. That keeps me coming back. There is always somewhere to learn and grow here.”
  • “Community. There’s a warmth and friendliness when I walk through the doors, from everyone I encounter”
  • “My favorite pose is the ones you don’t see coming. You’ve taken the person’s class a few times and they throw in something you’ve never tried before. It teaches me that I can do more than I think.”
  • “The people here are the reason I keep practicing.”

Thank you, Chris for sharing your Funky Buddha Story with us and for adding to the Funky Community with your positivity and commitment to health & growth!

6 Reasons Why Women Make Amazing Co-Workers

By Uncategorized

I have the privilege of working in a predominantly female workplace, and in the spirit of International Women’s Day I would like to share a short list of “Reasons Why Working with Women Rocks.”

(Since it is 2019, and I want to be crystal clear, we also love the wonderful men that work with us, but International Women’s Day is for the ladies. Also of note, many of the praiseworthy things listed below are not exclusively female traits, but again I remind you – International Women’s Day. Grain of salt y’all, grain of salt.)

1. Women Are Professional Jugglers ????‍♀️

You hear it over and over again. Women are better multi-taskers than men. Is it out of environmental necessity or is it written into the genetic code? While actual studies on the topic have conflicting results, a recent study in the UK, published in the journal BMC Psychology, found that when testing a specific type of multi-tasking, juggling many tasks in rapid succession, women greatly outperformed men. When presented with the list of tasks individually, men and women performed equally well. But when the speed of succession was increased and the tasks jumbled, the men’s performance slowed 77%, while the women’s performance slowed only 69%. This may not seem like a big difference, but compounded over time, the difference in productivity could be significant. (source: BBC News)

So, there is a little bit of science for you, but seriously how about a little bit of straight up day-to-day observation. Even in this increasingly progressive world, women (in most cases) carry a disproportionate amount of the “at home project management responsibility” That means potentially coordinating the schedules of the entire family and juggling ALL THE THINGS – possibly in addition to their professional work load. And like all skills, successful practice increases proficiency.

Single mom as a prospective employee? Hell yes. That woman knows how to Get. Shit. Done. Heck, any mom as a prospective employee. Hell yes. We don’t discriminate. Not a mom? No problem. See the above research. It’s in your genetics ladies. You were made to Get. Shit. Done.

2. Let’s all say it together – Emotional Intelligence ????????

This one has been scientifically proven again and again. Women have higher levels of emotional intelligence. Supposedly it is an evolutionary thing. Here is the logic. A woman needs to know how to communicate and take care of an infant through non-verbal communication and facial cues. In short, in order for the human species to survive – women need to know how to “read” a facial expression with a higher degree of accuracy than men. Raise your hand if you think that is true. ????

In the work place, this can be a wonderful tool. Sometimes everything seems like it should be okay – logically – a meeting, an interaction, a sale. But something is just off. We live in the Midwest, the “Midwestern Nice” belt of the United States. People here are notoriously “polite” at the expense of being candid. Being able to detect when the emotions and the logic of a business interaction don’t match is a critical skill. And thanks to cavewomen taking care of little tiny cavebabies, women have the upper hand when it comes to this skillset.

3. Women are Excellent Collaborators ????

It takes a village. Again, history. Historically we existed in tribal societies. Our current social and societal norms are incredibly new in the grand scheme of human history. Historically tribes of women saw to the harmonious operations of the extended family and overall community, while the men-folk were out hunting, farming…..and in more recent times running ad agencies a la Mad Men. And they were freaking GREAT at it! All the collaboration! Hanging out and getting shit done!

In more modern times, normal is that there “is no normal.” There is every kind of family and situation imaginable, and people are rockin’ all of them – our collective community is a beautiful mosaic made up of all that variety. But it can’t be denied that decades of historical collaborative tribe building was led by women, and we see the benefits of that legacy in modern women in many many ways – including in the workplace.

4. Women are Less Afraid to Say “I don’t know” ????‍♀️

A huge generalization to be sure, but one that I have found in my experience to be true.

While it is getting better, we do still live in a business world based on traits of masculine leadership, and one of the traits of masculine leadership is leadership based on certainty. It’s a lot of pressure – to be right all the time. I actually feel bad for men that have to navigate a business culture with such an unrealistic and frankly not very useful expectation.

Fortunately for us women, we are less encumbered by that history of pressure. It isn’t that women don’t lead, they just tend to lead differently. Leading an interaction to a useful outcome does not require that the interaction’s facilitator KNOWS the answer. She only needs to be able to guide the interaction to a useful outcome, and BOOM! Everyone wins.

5. Women Have a High Threshold of Pain ????????️‍♀️

And we are back to science…or at least generally accepted principles that sound sort of science-y. The truth is that pain is extremely subjective and the actual science of whether women really tolerate pain better than men shows mixed results. Pain sensitivity vs. Pain threshold…blah blah blah…..

BUT according to the very reputable MythBusters – it is TRUE! MythBusters orchestrated an experiment wherein they measured how long people could hold their hands in extremely cold water – and drumroll……WOMEN WON!!!

YAS Queens! As it relates to the workplace – and LIFE? Women tolerate discomfort gracefully. They work when they are sick or when their tummies hurt or if they have a splinter. Not that I am saying that men are weenies when they are sick……but…..there has to be a study on that somewhere.

6. Women Understand the Healing Power of Foods ????????????????

I saved the best for last.

This is when I love my office of ladies the most. Let me set the stage: Crazy busy week. Tons of deadlines. We are cranking it out. GETTING. SHIT. DONE.

Someone says, “This day is going to be off the chain. We had better decide what delicious things we are going to eat for lunch right now.” And that is how you know that you work with the BEST. TEAM. EVER.

Women. Women know that planning for the amazing buffalo cauliflower from the restaurant downstairs is vital to maximizing the productivity of the day – for many reasons.

1. You must take breaks.

2. You must feed your brain with nutritious food.

3. Let’s bond over delicousness.

So, there you have it. Six reasons why I love working in my workplace full of women. Happy International Women’s Day y’all. Let’s celebrate ALL the wonderful women out there kicking butt and taking names – living life and making the world better for everyone around them. Keep on killinit ladies. ♥

Journey to Super Yogi

Journey to Super Yogi

Growth through practice takes all forms and the journey is different for everyone. This month we feature a beloved member of our Funky Buddha Team as she shares her personal Super Yogi Journey. We are so proud of you Mads!

Funky Buddha entered my life in March of 2014. I was in my senior year at Hope College (Go Dutch), uncertain of what came next, and my dear friend Steph invited me to come to yoga with her. We went to a Buddha Basics Flow taught by Larissa, and after that, I tried my hardest to fit in every class I could that fit in my schedule. I accepted a position at the front desk of Holland about a year after my first class at the Buddha. That was way back when a 9 am yoga class was too early for me, which is laughable now considering I’m at the desk in Eastown for most of the 6 am classes. Back when skipping was easier than showing up and just doing the thing. Four years and eight months after my first class, I live in East Hills, work at the Eastown studio, and at the beginning of November, I became a Super Yogi.

For those who aren’t familiar with Funky Buddha language, that means you’ve taken 250 classes and get a shirt reminiscent of the Superman logo (which I wore for easily four days straight after I received it). I told one of our teachers that I was going to be writing a post for the monthly newsletter, she asked about the content, and I told her it was about my journey to becoming a Super Yogi. She was taken aback: “But haven’t you been here forever?!” And I said that that’s exactly why I’m writing this. A friend of mine reached Super Yogi status after like, ten months. So yeah, while I’ve been coming here for a while, it did indeed take me a hefty chunk of time to reach this milestone in my practice.

Throughout all of this, I’ve struggled with honoring my journey as my own and not letting myself compare my journey to someone else’s. There are still times where I feel embarrassed that it’s taken me many years to even reach 250 classes, because it shows that I lacked commitment to the practice for so long. Committing to something is not easy work, especially when it causes me to get up and do something rather than do nothing. I struggle to get to class most days, to leave my home and my pets and my Netflix. Yet through all of that, I have almost never thought, “I should have stayed home and not gone to yoga.” When I show up to practice, I show up for myself. I prove to myself that I can do something rather than nothing, that I can move forward.

The practice of yoga has evolved into a living, breathing thing for me. It has become a part of me. It is not just a way I move my body and stretch and sweat. It causes me to look inward, to reflect on my actions, movements, thoughts, interactions. To be aware. I see this everywhere, from how I move on my mat to how I speak with people at the coffee shop. Yoga is there to ask me the harder questions and to help me work through some of the clutter that I have in my life. Sometimes, it offers just enough space to help me prioritize my to do list for work or for my personal life, and other times it gives me just enough peace to focus on myself in practice. And maybe get in a little snooze during savasana. Yoga helps me find enough of whatever it is I need to be able to move through my day with ease, and to face the stressors of life changes with determination.

The beautiful joy of establishing a yoga practice is that it is always evolving. My body is more capable of moving than it was when I started yoga ten years ago. I have more awareness and intelligence about myself and what I can do, and what I am not yet able to do. I know that if I want to advance my practice, become stronger, get into and hold the more difficult poses, all I need to do is move past the walls and barriers I built, and commit. Commit to myself, the practice, the challenge of putting caring for myself at the top of my list. Super Yogi status is a big deal to me for many reasons. Mainly, it shows that there is something I have been able to commit to for nearly five years. The commitment may have faltered at times, but Funky Buddha was always there to greet me when I was ready to come back, and ready to prove that yes, I can show up for myself and do the thing. That is my joy in finding a yoga practice. That is my joy in being able to work in the space where I do yoga every day I can. That is my joy in becoming a Super Yogi.

Check out this year’s Super Yogis!

Broga

By Uncategorized, Yoga

Broga + Bros Doing Yoga. It is a thing.

There is no denying it. Yoga has become much more mainstream in the past several years.

And yet….we still often hear specific hesitation in the male population when it comes to to the idea of rolling out a yoga mat and getting on the yoga-train.

We can’t help but wonder WHY?!?

Strength. Flexibility. Mindfulness. Cross-training. Detoxification. A straight up GOOD SWEAT. It seems like these benefits transcend gender. Yet, yoga remains a predominantly female activity.

At the Funky Buddha we see quite a few men – many more than the overall “industry standard.” But still we find ourselves fielding a lot of questions from warry males and have a lot of female students that wish the males in their lives would “just give it a try.”

YOGA IS FOR EVERYBODY!

brogan funky buddha yoga hothouse

To strengthen our case, below are some commonly expressed concerns & questions, answered by some of our really-real-life male yoga students.

What do you say to guys that say yoga is just for girls?

“Want to get rid of those pesky love handles? Well come try out a hot yoga class and it will kick you’re a$$! It’s all about how much effort you put in, if you go through the paces it won’t be a killer exercise but if you work on hand stands and arm balances you bet your butt you’ll be sore!”

“You’re wrong.”

What should a guy (or what do you) wear to yoga?

“Clothing is not a terribly difficult hurdle, the key however, is a liner. Most athletic/running shorts have one built in and generally work fine. Spandex by itself, or with shorts over top also works well. Remember, yoga is going to push you and your wardrobe, make sure the flexibility and durability of your clothing out performs your physical ability. It’s embarrassing for you and distracting for everyone else if the two get switched around.”

Is there such a thing as “TOO Sweaty” ?

“Absolutely not, your body is designed to sweat and the more you can tap into that mechanism the better. Just make sure you bring plenty of water to replenish what you lose.”

“Never! Embrace the sweat and get those toxins out!”

What would you say to dudes that are hesitant to try yoga?

“I train multiple movement disciplines daily, plus I drive a lot for my profession. Yoga helps maintain suppleness and balance with my body. Without it I’d be in a lot of trouble with pain management and my ability to push myself in other disciplines. The women of the studio are wonderful and it’s a place of refuge for me after a stressful day. You feel cared for and appreciated. I couldn’t imagine not having the studio apart of my weekly routine.”

“Rip that band-aid off and just do it. Embrace it and meet some awesome people along the way!”

“There is more to gain than there is to lose. I was self-conscious when I started and still am from time to time, but it’s to satisfying and effective of an activity to be brushed aside for the sake of social stigma.”

So there you have it, from the mouth of the bros doing broga at the Funky Buddha.

Give it a try.

…and in celebration of Father’s Day, and to encourage the men of the Greater Grand Rapids area to give yoga a try. Men! Practice free for Father’s Day weekend. We declare this – National Broga Weekend. Do the yoga. You won’t regret it.
