Student of the Month

Funky Buddha July Student of the Month: Liz P.

By Student of the Month

Nominated by Jen G., July’s Student of the Month is Liz!

Funky Buddha July Student of the Month Liz

The lovely Liz P. is such an inspiration!

Fitting in yoga (or self-care in general) can be challenging for any of us, but as a hard working third-shifter, it can be an extra challenge.  Liz has never let that dampen her high yoga spirits!

Since starting her Funky Buddha yoga practice in 2013, she’s completed multiple 30 day dares.  In this most recent 30 day dare, she was 10 classes behind in the last days of it, yet she pushed through 2 classes a day and had an amazing attitude and outlook on meeting the goal she set for herself.  Liz’s ability to meet the challenge with mental strength, but also a lightness that she was just going to do her best, is really what yoga is all about.  It’s that ever so delicate balance of strength and softness, hard work and consistency, but never taken too seriously.  She takes the yoga habit seriously, but has fun with the daily practice.

Liz is such an integral part of our Holland community.  Thank you Liz, for supporting our Community Classes, for deepening your yoga practice through multiple workshops and dares, and for being a wonderful example of what yoga is all about.

We appreciate you Liz!

XOXO,

– Jen G. and your entire Funky Buddha Family

June Student of the Month: Frank

By Student of the Month, Yoga

Funny enough, yoga student Frank M. is celebrating his 1 year anniversary at Funky Buddha on June 1st.

HAPPY FUNKY ANNIVERSARY, FRANK!

June student of the month

On another great note, Christina noticed how dedicated Frank has been to his practice (and the 30-Day Dare) and nominated him for June’s Student of the Month!

Here’s his nomination via Christina:

Frank is crushing the 30-Day Dare! He’s one bad a$$ yogi who always has a smile on his face and is super friendly. Frank’s practice continues to grow every time he comes to the studio.

With a regular practice, it’s been a joy to see how strong he’s become and how every class has been used as a chance to keep learning.

Frank is like a sponge –  absorbing knowledge about his practice and putting it to use.

Frankly, Frank is great (bad joke, but that’s how I roll)!

May Student of the Month: Cathy

By Student of the Month

May student of the month, Cathy, is beloved by staff and students alike, always shows up to class early and with a huge smile on her face. Maybe that’s the reason why Katie nominated her as May’s Student of the Month! Here’s her story from Katie:

May student of the month: Cathy

Cathy was a yogi even before she realized it herself. She came to the studio to support a friend going through a hard time and did the 40 Days to Personal Revolution program together. She was a standout and quickly made yoga a consistent part of her life. She has never given up and I’m so glad she didn’t.

Cathy is truly an inspiration proving that no matter where you are in your life, you can create a strong practice.

I’ve watched her grow and do things she may not have though she was capable of. She’s become an invaluable part of our community. Even after a shoulder surgery, Cathy was right back at it (probably before the Dr. gave the ok! Hah)!

She is always the first student in the studio with a smile on her face and ready to work hard. So inspiring!

April Students of the Month

By Student of the Month, Yoga

The Student of the Month has a new TWIST for April… a group of students have been nominated!

Hearing stories like this one is what it’s all about – giving a space for us to come together, build a support system, a community. Adam, our Eastown lead, nominated a group of students who formed friendships in their 9am classes.

Here’s their story via Adam:

students of the month
By definition the word community is, “a social unit of any size that shares common values (practice of yoga), or that is situated in a given geographical area (e.g. Eastown Location).

I can not think of a better way to describe these individuals that can be found together daily at our 9am  Power Flow class in Eastown – Rhonda M., Michelle, R., Marc H., Jaimie H., Teddy H., Patti M. and Katelyn V.

April students of the monthThese students have built a support system and family together. There are three moms (Patti, Rhonda and Michelle), wife and husband (Marc and Jaimie) and the twenty-somethings (Katelyn and Teddy), but none of that matters come 9am.

They come together to practice yoga each and every day at. Beyond just practicing, they share their life stories from outside of the studio with each other.

They know when their vacations are, if they have kids what they are doing in school, what they are doing with their weekends, with their partners,  they share personal interests in music, books, and poses, with no judgement.

If you know anything about me personally, I am a huge fan of superheros. With this group, I have found my Justices of Yoga/Avengers of Yoga.

Thank you to every one of you for coming in sharing your sweat, smiles and stories with each other and with me. I do not know what my mornings would look like with out you.

March’s Student of the Month: Vern B.

By Student of the Month, Yoga

Most of you know Vern if you go to the Holland yoga studio. He’s usually the first one to class, but heck, he’s even kind enough to bring us treats! What a guy.

We’re recognizing Funky Buddha Member Vern B. as March’s Student of the Month for his constant support of other students, the studio and his dedication to his practice. Vern, you’re one in a million.

Nominated and written by Funky Buddha Mentee, Jen S. Here’s Vern’s story:

vern student of the monthThis is Vern.

Vern is a self-proclaimed country boy.

Vern considers Funky Buddha his family.

Vern needs yoga in his life.

If you’ve ever gotten a high-five and a big smile from a friendly face after rising from a transcendent Savasana…it might have been from this guy.

However, this new found confidence is only because his yoga practice has encouraged him to step out of the “barnyard.”

Vern experienced his first yoga class over three years ago when his fit friends told him about The Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse opening. He never looked back.

“This practice has given me so much; without a doubt I’m stronger, more flexible and my doc definitely likes my lower blood pressure — but don’t overlook gaining patience, peace, and the clarity to authentically connect with people. I am a better friend, spouse and parent. This practice has taught me to love myself for who I am and accept others for who they are. Yoga resets my mind. It doesn’t surprise me to find a college athlete, a business professional or a doctor on the mat next to me. Yoga isn’t competitive. It’s about taking care of yourself.”

I know those are only a few of the reasons why Vern and so many others dig our 95° tropical workout. Everybody and every body is welcome here.

Off the mat, Vern enjoys mowing his lawn, archery and bow hunting. Oh and this yogi can cook and bake! I wouldn’t let him out of half-pigeon until he shared this recipe for the sinful cookies he brought into the studio at Christmas (below). You’re welcome.

Vern enjoys sharing how yoga has transformed his life. Next time you see him in the studio, say hi…or maybe holler “howdy!”

We think you’re perfectly Funky, Vern!

“Yoga is the best way I know how to disconnect from the world and totally connect to my well-being.”

BONUS! Here’s another Vern love note from Michele, our Operations Mgr:

Vern was “all in” from the beginning and has become even more infused into the community as time has gone on. I am so happy to know Vern both as a yogi and client, but also as an ambassador for the Funky Buddha.  He takes it upon himself to invite people to classes and spreads the love by introducing himself to new students.

From sharing his homemade guacamole with the staff,  to calling just to say “hi,” I am always happy to see and hear from our Vern!

January’s Student of the Month Love

By Hot Yoga, Student of the Month

Recognizing Funky Buddha Member Jessica M. as January’s Student of the Month for her dedication to herself and her practice over the past year. You’re an inspiration to many, Jessica!

January Student of Month

Nominated and written by Funky Buddha instructor Laurie. Here’s Jessica’s story:

“’Yoga has saved my life.’ –Jessica M.

Just about a year ago, Jessica had never practiced yoga before until she forced herself to go to an ABC class, then another, then, terrified, she took a Basics class. Now, one year later, and 100 pounds lighter, (yes, ONE HUNDRED POUNDS) yoga is a way of life for her.

‘I did this for me, and also for my “shorties” (son 6 & daughter 3 ½). If I didn’t take care of myself and empower myself, how would my daughter learn it?’

Now, when she practices at home, her kids will strike a pose along with her.

Jessica doesn’t really like to talk about herself, but recently felt compelled to share her story after class, which is just too inspiring to not share with everyone. It really hit her a few months back when she was carrying two, 40 lb bags of salt pellets into her home. She stopped dead in her tracks and set the bags down.Tears welled in her eyes as she realized that the 80 pounds she was struggling with was the same amount of weight that she had lost this year.

‘I will never forget that moment. That realization was profound. It was meant to happen just as it did.’

What I love about Jessica is that her story means so much more than a number on a scale, it’s a life transformation.

Jessica Yoga Student of Month

‘Yoga has changed how I look at life, at family, friends…everything. It’s a spiritual awakening. I’ve understood the concept of living an authentic, organic life, but I didn’t really get it until I looked within, to love myself. When I get done practicing yoga, I feel like myself, like I’ve peeled away the layers of debris, and found my true self. When I tap into my inner, true self, I’m SO excited for the future.’

When you come from a clear place where you love yourself, it’s easier to drop things that aren’t serving your higher self, including relationships.

‘I’ve dropped a lot of weight in that department as well. Now, everything I do, I ask myself how it will affect my practice. From the food that I eat, to what I drink, to how I spend my time, to how much sleep I get… it’s all a factor.’

She doesn’t claim to be perfect, in fact, she’s human, and humble, and imperfect, just living with an awareness that she’s never had before.

Jessica never thought that she’d take a Power Vinyasa class, but she does now, regularly.

‘When I’m in class and holding a difficult pose I hear what you’ve shared in class, that everything is temporary, and I get into my breath. Then I tell myself, You can do anything! Look at what you’ve done already!

Jessica practices 3 days a week in the studio, and maintains that her commitment to yoga, and abstaining from fast food and soda is key to her success. Also, it’s the love and support from her husband and mother that have made this possible.

‘This yoga is part of our family budget. I’m a better wife, mother, and person through yoga.’

Jessica works right across the hall from The Funky Buddha, at Tonic Salon. Many of her long time clients ask about her transformation, and she just points towards the door, ‘It’s yoga.’

Congratulations, Jessica! Shine on.”
