FB: Why yoga? Why Funky Buddha?
AG: I started practicing at Funky Buddha this summer and it was my first time doing hot yoga! My mentor and fellow FB yogi, Shanna took me when I was trying to navigate new waters after a friend passed away and this was the first thing I found that helped me let go of some emotions and just be. I had tried yoga before, but Funky Buddha was something entirely different in the best way. I have been astounded by the staff at FB and the ways they care about you and welcome you in so willingly and well. I keep coming back because of exactly that: the community!

FB: What keeps you motivated? (i.e. regularly committing to 6AM classes.)
AG: What keeps me coming, especially to 6 am, is that feeling right after I finish class when I get done with a hard flow and a really good sweat. I have never known anything that gets me more ready to start my day, it’s the perfect energizer and I feel so much better throughout the day. And Jen S. she has been my most constant motivator and seriously brightens my day more than most anyone I know.

FB: On that topic, how do you convince or coax your friends into trying hot yoga with you at 6AM?! #seriouslyamazing
AG: Well truthfully, as a senior (in college) I have been the worst at working out since being at school and my friends have noticed such a difference since I started yoga. They have seen how happy I am with this commitment and each have wanted to try it out (I usually make them try the 6 am.) And the reason they keep coming back has nothing to do with me! It’s all about FB!

FB: How do you feel after completing the 30-Day Dare? Any deep thoughts after consistently practicing? Final takeaways? Ah-ha moments? Feeling stronger?
AG: My most significant takeaway came from a class I took with Laurie, right in the middle of the Dare. She talked about how we wear these masks always throughout our days, but when we’re in the studio, we get to be our most real, vulnerable selves. This was something that really stuck with me and kept me motivated throughout Dare month. I knew when I came to my mat that I could simply ‘just be’ in the space and be whatever I needed with no expectations or the need to be anything I was not. I also feel SO much stronger and just generally healthier after this month and I feel it throughout my days.

FB: Any advice to fellow yogis, young and old?
AG: I think my best advice, something I have told my friends since they have started, is (like I said before): There are no expectations. You do not NEED to do every pose. It is about what is best for you always and I have been so reminded of that throughout these last couple months. FB is such a great community, while also being one that values you as an individual and I respect that a lot. However, at the same time, you are so much more capable than what you tell yourself and a good push (aka a Katie class) is something you CAN do. “You can do hard things” echoes in my head every class.

Did you know members can bring a friend to their first Funky Buddha Yoga class FO’ FREE?!?! #4real What are you waiting for?!?

June Student of the Month: Pat H.

By Student of the Month, Yoga

SOTM_Pat

Meet Awesome Amazing Pat, one of the O.G. Holland yogis that has been with us for quite some time (like, four years to be exact).

Pat was nominated for Student of the Month by our very own super smiley and sweet Holland front-desker, Meg!

I want to nominate Pat H. for student of the month! He’s crushing the DARE right now. Pat has been such a key part of Funky Buddha for a long time. He is so faithful in his practice and is legally blind. He’s practiced TWO times every day and walks back and forth to the studio. Pat told me today that with his walking and yoga-ing it adds up to a little over 40 hours. He’s really kept the morale high in Holland this month. 🙂 —Meg

A Little Bit About Pat:

I became visually disabled just over nine years ago from blood clots in my retinas of both eyes.  I have a little vision in my right eye which makes it hard for me to identify people.  Probably the easiest way is to describe it is it like having Vaseline on your glasses. Each state has a training center for teaching the visually disabled to adapt to their needs.  Ours is located in Kalamazoo and I was able to attend.  I learned reading and writing in braille, cooking, cleaning, wood shop, white cane mobility, computers, etc. They also offered a yoga class which was my first exposure to this lifestyle.

When and why did you start practicing at Funky Buddha?

I noticed Funky Buddha when it was in the construction stage as I walked by the Holland location on the way to the gym. Like most, I started with the Groupon offer four years ago this month. We live just under two miles from the Holland location on the other side of the highway. I usually walk to class, but in the winter & in bad weather I ride the bus.

What’s your favorite pose and why?

What I appreciate the most is the camaraderie with my fellow classmates & staff.  My favorite pose is legs up the wall.

What obstacles or challenges has yoga helped you to overcome?

The “DOUBLE DOWN DOG DARE” is my personal challenge which started last year when I turned 60. My challenge is to complete two classes each day for the entire month to equal my age. Last year I made through the 26th day and ended up in the hospital for a unrelated health problem. This year I completed all 31 days.  Since I walk both ways to class I am estimating that I spent about 40 hours each week to achieve my goal. During this dare, I attended 65 classes and walked over a half million steps per my Fitbit. Thank you to everyone for your support during my journey.

Anything else you’d like to share?

First, I need to thank my wife, Kim for letting me keep up the habit.  Also, a big THANK YOU to all the Holland staff for all their help and friendship that has developed over the years.

May Students of the Month: Liz + Suzi

peep diorama

One peep, two peep, pink peep, blue peep! Meet the dynamic duo behind the amazing Funky Buddha Easter Peep diorama. Colleagues, friends, Funky Buddhas, these ladies bring the FUN to Funky.

Find out why our very own Jen McDaniel nominated the duo as this month’s Student(s) of the Month!

Liz and Suzi show up with energy and excitement, and better yet, on the days they don’t, one of them will say something real like, “I just really need this today” or “it feels good to be here right now.”

Liz and Suzi had Funky Buddha on their minds this month when they built a tiny, precious Peeps diorama of our studio, including fruit roll-up yoga mats and a chalkboard wall! A+ for their attention to detail—right down to the Starburst yoga blocks. 😉

Liz and Suzi are my latest she-ros, working their tails off as community leaders, mentoring and modeling positivity for children and teachers, AND giggling their butts off in hot pink yoga pants when the day is done.

Three cheers for Liz, Suzi and all the great yoga Peeps! —Jen

Suzi, Liz and Jen!

A little Q & A with Liz + Suzi:

Why yoga?

Yoga is fun and is helping us stay fit! Liz was introduced to the Funky Buddha by a friend in Holland and she convinced Suzi to join this past fall. After a long day as administrators in a school, sweating bullets is invigorating!

How did the two of you meet?

We work together at Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic School, just down the street from the Eastown location. Suzi is the Principal and Liz is the Assistant Principal.

It’s pretty cool that the two of you are able to practice together. How did this start? How often?

We are able to practice together because we work together, right up the street! Since we are so close to Funky Buddha and work together we motivate each other to get to class…even when we would rather go shopping!

How have you impacted or influenced each other’s lives?

(Liz) Suzi has impacted my life because I get to watch her and learn from her as the leader of our school. She is an amazing person and she is also hilarious! We laugh together all of the time. That is another reason why coming to yoga together is so much fun!
(Suzi) Actually, Liz is the hilarious one! Both of us are very driven and motivated to stay healthy, so when one of us decides to workout the other wants to join! We keep each other accountable to our practice!

Are either of you planning to do the 30-Day Dare or have you in the past?

We have talked about doing the 30-Day Dare, as neither of us has done it before, but our work schedules keep us at meetings at least once or twice a week so at this time we are not doing the May challenge. However, we have talked about doing our own challenge in June or July once school is out! Suzi has been trying to get me to do her 30 -day wine dare…I might be more successful at that! A 30-Day Dare is a goal for us in the future.

Advice to fellow yogis, young and old?

Have fun at yoga and if you can go with a friend, it makes your practice so much more fun!

April Student of the Month: Leah S.

By Student of the Month, Student Stories, Yoga

Leah Amanda SOTM

April’s Student of the Month was nominated by Funky Buddha Staff Instructor (and local bad ass), Amanda. We’ve enjoyed watching Leah’s practice evolve and revolve while recovering from her injury. She went from taking no Chaturangas, to knee-down Chaturangas, to full-blown Chaturanga (and now she’s even hand-standing!!) Leah’s patience, dedication and commitment to her practice is truly recognizable!

Leah and Amanda SOTM

Leah’s Story

“I will be the first to say that yoga is not something I had anticipated for my life. To be honest, until a few years ago, my knowledge of the practice was limited, but I will be the first to say that it has been one of the most enriching journeys I have been a part of.

I think the very makeup of a person comes from the people and places that they invest in – the very part that makes one feel home.

For so much of my life, sports were my home. I grew up playing soccer, ran cross-country, and even tried my hand at volleyball and basketball back in the “glory days.” Sport was something I invested in, and I truly grew from the team aspect and togetherness.

But as the years went on, a herniated disk that started in the 8th grade began to worsen. At first, the pain came in moments and was problematic for short periods of time, but after college soccer ended, I began to decline in health and even the basic activities of daily living became more and more difficult. Things like sitting for any extended period, car rides, sleeping, getting out of bed, moving, and even walking became almost unbearable. The identity I had as an athlete slowly faded.

I had given hot yoga a shot prior to surgery to see if the warm temps, stretching, and strengthening would aid in my back pain, but surgery was inevitable. I had surgery on October 10, 2014, and after it came and went, and through PT, walking and stretching my mobility slowly began to return, but my ability to actualize my physicality in the way I once had was no longer my reality.

However, I was determined to not let my injury hold me back. I wanted to push forward and get back into a physical activity that would be positive and challenging for me, despite my limitations. I decided when I was healed and mobile enough, I was going to give yoga another try. Yoga has been changing my life (and my back) ever since. My injury took many things from me but it brought me to yoga and the Funky Buddha! I am so thankful for the instructors, staff and fellow yogis who unknowingly pushed me through a very rough and painful season. I am a better person because of this practice. Thank you deeply!”

March Students of the Month: 4 Yoga Buds

By Student of the Month

Yoga Buds

There’s probably a bunch of people that you recognize regularly while on your mat, or that you ‘know’ but they are just your ‘yoga acquaintances’. Whether you just give a little smile or wave hello while you both acknowledge: ‘I-know-you-see-me-every-Tuesday-and-you-know-I-see-you’ so I’ll smile and wave sort of thing.

And here we have a little story about how four acquaintances became yoga buds and very good friends.

Arena, Carmen, Colleen and Laurie regularly crossed each other’s paths in classes, workshops and other Funky Buddha events over the years. But, it wasn’t until last year during the Holland 40-Days program that the four bonded and became yoga buds. Once the 6-week program had come to an end, these four made sure to continue to support each other on and off the mat. Together they: learned all about essential oils, how to brew their own Kombucha (#scoby), attended a henna workshop, and continue to practice together! Happy Friendaversary, ladies!

Yoga Buds

It’s important to find the time to get connected and cultivate new and meaningful relationships with those around you. Who are YOUR yoga acquaintances that could turn into good friends? Don’t be scared to break out of your shell and say a simple ‘hello’ or strike up a conversation with your yogi neighbor. C’mon, there’s one thing you KNOW you have in common, your love for yoga!

December Student of the Month: Robert N.

By Student of the Month

December Student of the Month

The December Student of the Month was nominated by staff instructor, Katie here’s her nomination story of Eastown/Forest Hills Student, Robert N:

Robert is a REG-U-LAR. You will probably recognize his friendly smile in Eastown and Forest Hills. He is definitely committed to growth and this practice.

A month ago, a conversation that we had reminded me AGAIN of how great he is, and how great this practice is – how it teaches us something new every day and in every season. The gist of the conversation was about how he DID NOT finish the 30-Day Dare. When I asked him about it, he said his body really needed a break and he took two days off – on purpose – because he was really LISTENING to his body. Yes, he missed the dare by TWO classes, and I have never been more inspired by a yogi who didn’t complete the Dare as I am of this guy.

To some people, growth is finally conquering a tough pose (which I have definitely seen Robert do this past year gracefully). To others, I would even say MANY of us, at various times and in various ways, growth is recognizing when you need to slow down, or when you need a break. “Real Yoga,” in physical practice and in life, is learning how to truly listen to and take care of yourself – push when you need to push and be gentle when the pushing becomes counterproductive. Finding balance can be the most difficult kind of yoga.

Robert has shown what this practice is truly about. Cultivating growth through practice. I’ve seen him grow immensely these past few years. By not completing the Dare, he is actually LIVING his yoga. That is so inspiring and exciting!! We are so lucky to have Robert as part of the Funky Buddha community!!

November Student of the Month: Richard P.

By Student of the Month

November student of the monthOur November Student of the Month was nominated by our own yoga teacher-extraordinaire, Lindsay:

Richard has practiced in over 800 classes.  He’s been a regular Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday guy for over 5 years.  Despite all of that, this October was his first 30-Day Dare.  I nominated Richard because he stepped out of his routine and habit and CHANGED IT UP this month.  Even if he was motivated by his friends and fellow classmates Grace and Phil! (“Well, if PHIL is doing the dare then I CAN TOO!”)  Every week when I’d check in with Richard and say “How’s it going practicing every day?!” He’d say, “Ya know, it’s not much different than practicing every other day.”

Richard, I’m proud to have practiced next to you in hundreds of classes.  I’m honored I get to see you on a regular basis and watch you grow!  You motivate and inspire me to keep getting on my mat because you keep getting on yours.  Congrats on your first 30-in-a-row!  <3 Linds

Did you know you have practiced over 814 classes?!

What an honor to be considered for this, I see so many participants whose yoga skills and abilities stand light years ahead of mine. I did know that I had gotten somewhere near 800, have my sights set on 1,000 sometime next summer.

Why yoga?

Why yoga? I have always enjoyed being active, was a happy runner for many years until having to give it up due to recurring sciatic nerve issues. I replaced running with group exercise classes at the YMCA. Then this lovely daughter of mine opened a hot yoga studio and gently suggested several times that I should give it a try. One snowy day a few February’s ago the Y was closed but Funky was open so I gave it a shot. I was hooked and started working it in with my Y schedule but in a few months it became my primary exercise. Increasing age robs balance, flexibility, and strength. Yoga in the heat has been a perfect answer to that for me. I made excuses for years whenever the 30-Day Dare came along. A little “encouragement” from Grace and Phil on October 1 pushed me to a last minute decision to do it and I’m so glad I did. I feel great, had to get over a little hump about halfway, but overall it’s an invigorating experience that I will repeat.

Advice to fellow yogis, young and old?

My new favorite pose is half moon. The instructors have done such a great job teaching variations of it this month. My advice? For anyone regardless of age, practice regularly. Yoga is a marathon not a race to somewhere quick. Change comes slowly but regularly and I’ve found the long term benefits invaluable. I never feel alone, I’ve met so many enjoyable people as we sweat our way through. Thank you to all of the staff; it’s a great group of encouraging people.

October Student of the Month: Michael R.

By Student of the Month, Yoga

Funky Buddha October Student of the MonthThis October’s Student of the Month was nominated by our super-spunky-sweet Studio Operations Coordinator for Forest Hills, Chelsea!

Michael is so deserving of Student of the Month! Since starting his 30-day trial I feel like we saw him almost every day at Forest Hills. Turns out, he came to 20 classes over the 30 day period, what a boss! He always shows up with an amazing attitude, and a smile, and even showed me a little Buddha his son gave him that he keeps in his car as a reminder to get on his mat.

As a New Yogi, and now a Member, his dedication to his practice during his first month at the studio was inspiring, and really shows how much hard work, patience, and a supportive community can pay off.
We are thankful he’s part of our studio and community, and look forward to many more Michael attended classes!

Funky Buddha September Student of the Month: Karen M.

By Student of the Month

Funky Buddha September Student of the Month

This September’s Student of the Month was nominated by Madeline, our lovely Holland front-desker!

I first met Karen in April of 2015. Both of us were new at that point, me to the front desk, her to the practice. She was a community class-er, and I saw her every Sunday night for about a month and a half. From the first day she came into the studio, I could tell that she was genuinely kind-hearted, and she has only continued to prove that to me as time has gone on. One Sunday when she came for class, she excitedly told me that she wanted to sign up for the membership. Attending class once a week wasn’t enough, and just over a year later she has reached Super Yogi status!

Every time Karen walks into the studio (and that’s not an exaggeration, I do mean every time), I feel my day get a little bit brighter. When she came in to use her one year anniversary discount, we talked about her journey with us. I remember Karen’s time with Funky Buddha very vividly, and I always look forward to seeing her. She has a contagiously positive energy about her. Karen is testament to the type of students who slowly fall in love with the practice, and then jump in with both feet and never look back. I feel a sense of honor at seeing Karen grow with us in her practice from the start, and I am only excited to watch as she continues to grow (and to give her that Super Yogi shirt!).

August Student of the Month: Amy W.

By Student of the Month

This August’s Student of the Month was nominated by Adam, resident superhero and Eastown SOC – here’s his nomination of Eastown student, Amy W:

Amy WernerAmy started with us in February, after being recommended to do hot yoga at Funky Buddha by her doctors who were treating her for a back injury. As it turned out, she had 5 injured discs in her back and it’s been a steady climb back to good health thanks to the assistants and teachers at Funky Buddha who ensure a safe and helpful practice.

Amy is now back in full force and is so grateful for the studio and has now brought a few friends into the practice as well.

She recently went on a sailing trip with her family and when she came back she shared her journey of the trip with me. “Without this practice, I would not have been strong enough to do any of the stuff that I did on that trip. Especially at my age.

Amy, is a true inspiration yogi. Thank you Amy for sharing your story with me. Keep up the great practice.

– Adam, Studio Operations Coordinator
