4 Benefits of Yoga

By Healthy Living, Hot Yoga, Uncategorized, Yoga

Everyone loves their yoga pants, but does everyone actually DO yoga in their yoga pants? And if not – why? Cause yoga is AMAZING!!

Comfy pants aside, yoga is a uniquely holistic movement experience, and therefore, offers an amazingly broad set of benefits.

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘yuji,’ which means “union.” Appropriately, the practice is the union of physical movement, controlled breath, and disciplines of mindset. This combination of elements makes a regular yoga practice fertile ground for a wide array of benefits. Here are a few of our favorites.

The Physical Stuff:

We all know that movement is good for us. Any time we get off the couch or away from our desks and move our butts – Healthy Lifestyle, PLUS ONE. Sedentary Couch Potato, ZERO. There are a lot of different types of yoga. For more info on the various forms go HERE. Funky Buddha Yoga (hot power vinyasa), in particular, is an athletic form of yoga that provides a unique combo of STRENGTH + FLEXIBILITY. The “vinyasa” part of Hot Power Vinyasa refers to the fact that it is a moving form – we flow from one pose to another. This movement between static poses is particularly beneficial, as it mimics the functional movement that occurs in everyday life. If you are going to spend time getting stronger, why not get stronger in ways that help you in everyday movement? Sounds like a good plan, eh? We think so too.

Sweat:

At the Funky Buddha we like our yoga HOT. 95 degrees hot. There are a lot of reasons that we like a heated practice, but the one we like the most is the SWEAT. Getting sweaty is good for you. It increases heart rate, which increases blood flow, which moves lymph, which increases our body’s natural ability to detoxify itself. Regular sweating makes our body more responsive to changes the environment and increases our body’s ability to regulate temperature. Regular sweating helps to keep our skin and hair in a naturally good moisture balance. Oh, the benefits they just keep on coming!

Social Solitude:

With the pace of modern life – the hustle, the constant attachment to our phones, the barrage of media, ALL the things – there has never been a time when people have been more simultaneously desperately in need of genuine community connection AND starved for meaningful individual solitude. While these two ideas seem diametrically opposed, a yoga class offers a place where people can achieve BOTH in one experience. A regular yoga practice offers scheduled time with other like-minded-self-care-focused humans, and yet, your yoga mat and your physical practice is all your own – a little rectangle of solitude in the warmth (both literally & figuratively) of community.

Transferable Skills:

The ability to use breath control to affect one’s physiology (ex: heart rate, blood pressure, hormone release) is one of the most important skills of meditation and biofeedback. A consistent yoga practice offers a unique opportunity to regularly practice these skills in a non-stressful environment. A regular 60-minute yoga class offers the opportunity for 60 FULL minutes of mindful breathing. When else during your day would you practice controlled breathing for 60 minutes???

Here is the SUPER great news. With enough practice (in yoga class), those skills of physiological control can be called upon when you really need them – in times of stress, anger, anxiety, depression, etc.

  • Some dufus texting while driving cuts you off in traffic? As you feel the anger warming your body, a few deep breaths can actually CHANGE YOUR STRESS RESPONSE
  • Overwhelm at work making it difficult to make a decision? A couple minutes of quiet mindful breathing can reduce your cortisol levels and OXYGENATE your brain.
  • So frustrated that you are about to lose your mind in an important meeting? A little internal self-talk and focusing on lengthening your exhales can get you BACK IN CONTROL.

We could spend all day listing the far-reaching benefits that a regular yoga practice can bring to your life, but the truth is that you need to dip a toe into the pool and give it a try for YOURSELF to really appreciate what yoga can bring to your life. Hopefully this little list has at least piqued your interest. Give it a try! See you on your mat.

How to Maintain Your Yoga Practice In Summer

By Healthy Living, Hot Yoga

How to maintain your yoga practice in summer

We get it, it’s summer.
It’s HOT.
Maybe, just maybe, the last thing you want to do is sweat even more in the heat.

BUT, hear us out. Keeping up your Funky Buddha Yoga practice in the summer is not only important, but can be fun too! Here are a few things to keep in mind, some extra motivation and fun ways to hit the mat even on those muggy Michigan days:

  • Plan your practice like you’re making an appointment. Scheduling your yoga-week ahead of time, maybe Sunday night, will help you commit to the week ahead and give motivation to get out the door and on to your mat.
  • Think about how you feel after class. Even on days when it seems impossible to practice, thinking about how great you feel after a great session of sweating, twisting, and flowing can get you over that hump and out the door. Actually take a couple of seconds to really imagine how great you feel after a practice. It may seem silly, but deliberate positive visualization makes all the difference.
  • Heat training. By consistently putting your body into the heat, you’re training yourself to go through the motions of staying calm, managing your breath, and creating the tools you need to stay active, no matter the temperature.
  • Maintaining routine. Some of us love routine and some of us do whatever we can to avoid it. Either way, staying in a rhythm with your practice will make transitioning back into the studio smooth and painless once temperatures drop and fall schedules rev up.
  • Extra sweat = extra detoxification. The more that you sweat the more that you release harmful toxins from your system.
  • The delicious satisfaction of choice. Let’s face it. There is no denying, we are in the deep part of Michigan summer. It is HOT. It is HUMID. You are going to sweat no matter what. You might as well be sweating purposefully, with a specific benefit in mind. Take that 90-100 degree days!

FUN THINGS COMING UP:

See, plenty of ways to get back in the swing of things in studio, through events or every week during our Outdoor Summer Classes on the lawn, roof and park. The yoga possibilities are never-ending.

Beat the (down)Dog Days of Summer and make room for more yoga in your life.

urban roots grand rapids

From the Crew at Urban Roots:

Located in the Southtown neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Urban Roots is a group of locally minded place makers who believe that growing food is an invitation into being fully human. The vehicle? Urban agriculture. Why? Because we care about food justice, unemployment, and community well being. Because we believe that cultivating soil in our own back yards and in our neighborhoods ultimately cultivates healthier families, relationships with one another, and relationships with our ecosystems.

In late November 2015, the Urban Roots team along with a generous group of friends, family, and volunteers began to transform what was to become the Urban Roots Community Farm & Education Center. Since then, 1316 Madison has seen change, warmth, and growth taking place inside and outside its walls.

This year, Urban Roots will be host to a slew of activities including the Community Farm, a YouthCorps Program in partnership with the Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation, and the Mobile Classroom, a partnership with 5 area churches, schools, and food pantries.

Looking to support and nourish your community? Looking to purchase fresh veggies grown in your own city? Urban Roots has CSA shares available and will also be conducting a market stand at our farm on Madison. Join us for our Second Annual Plant Sale and Open House on Saturday, May 14 from 9:30am – 2:00pm! We will have seedlings and heirloom varieties for sale, coffee to sip, music, and a celebration of the start of a new growing season with our neighbors.

For more information regarding CSA shares, community events, workshops, and ways to come alongside the work of Urban Roots, visit www.urbanrootsgr.org or visit us on Facebook.

You’ll be seeing more of Urban Roots at our Sunday Outdoor Community Classes (at Wilcox Park) this summer. STAY TUNED!

1,000 classes and counting…

No doubt you’ve seen Kathy D. around the studio – she is a regular after all. Kathy started as a student in Eastown and now calls the Holland studio home!

Kathy, thank you for your years of dedication to yourself and the studio. And welcome to the WALL OF FAME!

Wall of Fame

Wall of FameWhen and why did you start coming to Funky Buddha Yoga?
I started coming to Funky Buddha at the end of January 2010 because I just knew that I needed yoga in my life.

What’s it feel like to hit 1,000 classes?!
It feels like standing on top of a mountain, way above the tree line.

What’s your favorite yoga pose?
My favorite yoga pose is Fish because it reminds me to keep our hearts open to receive.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to newbie Funky Buddhas?
One piece of advice (there is never just one…) is to take it one day at a time, don’t overthink anything, and remember to breathe. Yoga has taught me so many life lessons and I have made very close friends in the studio – it’s like a family by choice, the best kind.

Yoga Love Notes: We

By Hot Yoga, Yoga

Since love is in the air and all, we might as well show some love for what brings us all together – YOGA.

yoga love notes

You shared why you love yoga on our Facebook page. Here are a few reasons why yoga won your hearts:

Renee –  There is nothing like the feeling you get from a hot yoga session. The intensity and concentration work your mind and body to the max and helps you connect in an intimate way to your soul. It brings you mindfulness and allows you to get in touch with you in the moment. It is so hard to explain, but I have benefited in so many ways since starting this practice!!

Jessica – The inner peace, happiness, self awareness and strength that hot yoga brings is amazing. I fought and beat breast cancer in 2015! As a survivor I was looking for something to get me back in the swing of things at a healthy pace. Hot yoga is helping me make the best of 2016 and my 2nd chance! I love hot yoga!

Adeola – I tried yoga for the first time yesterday! Although, I didn’t get all the moves, I loved the peace and relaxation that overcame me during the session! So much so, that I paid for more sessions ahead of time! I am so in love with yoga!!

Julie – Slowly, over time, I am healing. I love yoga because it is teaching me to be present, breathe, and to be ok with where I am.

funky buddha yoga love notes

Cassandra – I love yoga because it is the only time of the day that I’m just thinking about what I’m doing instead of 100 different things! And I love seeing the growth and the strength that comes with yoga! Doing things that I didn’t know I could even do a year ago!

Rachel – I love yoga because it never stops teaching. There’s always more to learn.

Jaime – Not only do I love what yoga has done for my spirit, but I love how practicing with my partner has helped us connect on a new level ♡

Sarah – Yoga calms my inner crazy and reminds me that I can be flexible with my mind, body and spirit.

Frankie – I love yoga because it’s helped me find the balance and purpose my life was missing.

Nikki – Yoga brings energy inside of me that nothing else dose. I feel empowered, clam, energized, and at peace all at the same time. It’s amazing how much can come from sometimes movements so small or still.

funky yoga love notesJen – I love yoga because … I learned how to breathe again

Elisabeth – Yoga gets me out of head and reminds me to take care of the whole me.

Jennifer – This consistent and dedicated practice has brought amazing opportunities into my life. I cannot imagine where I’d be without you, yoga.

Cath – I love yoga because it’s never the same thing twice, even if the flow of poses is the same. Sometimes, there’s the comfort of finding calm in the chaos. Other times, it’s all chaos. No matter what it is, in the end, it is exactly what it needed to be.

Jennifer – I love yoga because it helped me appreciate how strong my body really is, and in that way helps me love myself. Happy Valentine’s Funky!!

We’re feeling the love over here! Happy VDay or more like HAPPY LOVE YOURSELF AND OTHERS DAY!

January’s Student of the Month Love

By Hot Yoga, Student of the Month

Recognizing Funky Buddha Member Jessica M. as January’s Student of the Month for her dedication to herself and her practice over the past year. You’re an inspiration to many, Jessica!

January Student of Month

Nominated and written by Funky Buddha instructor Laurie. Here’s Jessica’s story:

“’Yoga has saved my life.’ –Jessica M.

Just about a year ago, Jessica had never practiced yoga before until she forced herself to go to an ABC class, then another, then, terrified, she took a Basics class. Now, one year later, and 100 pounds lighter, (yes, ONE HUNDRED POUNDS) yoga is a way of life for her.

‘I did this for me, and also for my “shorties” (son 6 & daughter 3 ½). If I didn’t take care of myself and empower myself, how would my daughter learn it?’

Now, when she practices at home, her kids will strike a pose along with her.

Jessica doesn’t really like to talk about herself, but recently felt compelled to share her story after class, which is just too inspiring to not share with everyone. It really hit her a few months back when she was carrying two, 40 lb bags of salt pellets into her home. She stopped dead in her tracks and set the bags down.Tears welled in her eyes as she realized that the 80 pounds she was struggling with was the same amount of weight that she had lost this year.

‘I will never forget that moment. That realization was profound. It was meant to happen just as it did.’

What I love about Jessica is that her story means so much more than a number on a scale, it’s a life transformation.

Jessica Yoga Student of Month

‘Yoga has changed how I look at life, at family, friends…everything. It’s a spiritual awakening. I’ve understood the concept of living an authentic, organic life, but I didn’t really get it until I looked within, to love myself. When I get done practicing yoga, I feel like myself, like I’ve peeled away the layers of debris, and found my true self. When I tap into my inner, true self, I’m SO excited for the future.’

When you come from a clear place where you love yourself, it’s easier to drop things that aren’t serving your higher self, including relationships.

‘I’ve dropped a lot of weight in that department as well. Now, everything I do, I ask myself how it will affect my practice. From the food that I eat, to what I drink, to how I spend my time, to how much sleep I get… it’s all a factor.’

She doesn’t claim to be perfect, in fact, she’s human, and humble, and imperfect, just living with an awareness that she’s never had before.

Jessica never thought that she’d take a Power Vinyasa class, but she does now, regularly.

‘When I’m in class and holding a difficult pose I hear what you’ve shared in class, that everything is temporary, and I get into my breath. Then I tell myself, You can do anything! Look at what you’ve done already!

Jessica practices 3 days a week in the studio, and maintains that her commitment to yoga, and abstaining from fast food and soda is key to her success. Also, it’s the love and support from her husband and mother that have made this possible.

‘This yoga is part of our family budget. I’m a better wife, mother, and person through yoga.’

Jessica works right across the hall from The Funky Buddha, at Tonic Salon. Many of her long time clients ask about her transformation, and she just points towards the door, ‘It’s yoga.’

Congratulations, Jessica! Shine on.”

Stories of Strength: Natalie’s 30-Day Dare

By Healthy Living, Hot Yoga

We all have stories.

Each year, the 30-Day Dare brings out amazing stories of strength, courage, and perseverance from Funky Buddha Yoga students, new and veteran. Natalie, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for sharing yours.

“I never took myself for a yogi.

Since committing myself to leading a life focused on fitness and wellness, I have gone through several phases (or obsessions…) with different workouts. There were times when all I wanted to do was run for days, when I loved conquering (what felt like) a near-death experience during every INSANITY workout, or when lifting the heaviest weights possible was all I could think about.

But never yoga.

When it came to working out, all I really cared about was the calories I was burning. I clearly recognized all of the physical benefits of exercise, but never considered the mental and emotional benefits it could also bring—that it should bring. Until I gave The Funky Buddha a try.

Before coming to The Funky Buddha, I had some experience with hot yoga, but not much. For months, I figured one class a week was enough to grow my practice. And then I abandoned my practice for about six months, ironically, when I needed it the most.

This year has been a difficult one for me—coping with several deaths of close family members and friends, and my dealing with my dad’s cancer returning after 5 years of remission. I first heard about the 30-Day Dare when I was starting to feel like I couldn’t handle the emotional turmoil any longer. As much as the thought of committing to my practice for 30 straight days intimidated me (yoga is not easy), I knew this was just what I needed to gain a different perspective and feel better mentally, emotionally, and physically. Funky Buddha dared me, and I decided not to back down.

natalie1 - 30-day dare

Natalie at the Eastown Funky Buddha Yoga studio.

I would be lying if I said the 30-Day Dare was a breeze. Of course I expected the Dare to be physically challenging; holding chair pose and half-pigeon for minutes on end, 30 days in a row definitely prompted some extra-loud ooji breaths now and then. However, I did not expect to experience as much of an emotional release in one month than I did.

It really all came together for me on the first Tuesday evening of the Dare during Katie’s 7:30pm class. She told us how yoga is perceived solely as a tool for relaxation, but what most people don’t realize until they get deeper into their practice is how yoga brings up things we couldn’t see before, or ignored to see. In short: Yoga exposes underlying truths, and can make us downright pissed off. I immediately burst into (silent) tears and could not stop for the rest of class. I was angry and sad, and it finally revealed itself. My entire practice changed forever that night.

Now that the 30-Day Dare is over, I can say that I am now 100% addicted to yoga, physically stronger, but most importantly, much more mentally and emotionally stronger than I have been in a long time. I cannot wait to continue on this journey as a Funky yogi.

To all the fabulous instructors and participants who inspired me every day, thank you. I am honored to have been able to share my practice with you! Namaste.” – Natalie

Yoga Wall of Fame - 1000+ classes at Funky Buddha Hot Yoga in Grand Rapids

What does 5 years of dedication and 4+ classes a week look like? Jason Miller can tell you – he hit 1,000 classes at Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse this August!

We are like proud parents—a HUGE congratulations to Jason on this giant feat!! Be sure to give him a high five next time you see him at the Eastown studio (which is often).

We asked the Yoga Wall-of-Famer questions about his practice and any sage wisdom to offer:

When and why did you start coming to Funky Buddha Yoga?
I started on Day 1 with the Funky Buddha… I had noticed the sign for a while before the grand opening and couldn’t wait to try it.

What’s it feel like to hit 1,000 classes?!
It feels great, like something worthwhile. I also believe my Massage clients have benefited from the physical strength and peace of mind I’ve gained doing hot yoga.

What’s your favorite yoga pose?
I love half moon!

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to newbie Funky Buddhas?
The same advice I was givenDon’t quit. It may take a while, but the benefits will come. I’m 20 lbs lighter than when I began and I’d like to think I’m a lot more stable as well.

Congrats x’s a 1,000, Jason!
