Meet Our Summer Interns

By General

To say we’re excited to have interns Delaney and Dani with us this summer is the understatement of the century.

These two ladies wowed us with their ideas, creativity, and fun personalities from the start – we can’t wait to see what they bring to the table this summer. You’ll be seeing a lot of them at our outdoor classes as they become a part of our team. Welcome to the Tribe, Delaney and Dani!

DELANEY

Interns Delaney
Hi yogis,

My name is Delaney Renker and I am one of two interns at Funky Buddha for Summer 2016. Next May I will graduate from Michigan State University with degrees in Communications and Public Relations.

Recently, I returned home from living and studying in Rome, Italy for four months where I had the most life-altering experience traveling, eating and learning.

For the next couple of months, you can find me snapping photos at all of the outdoor classes, posting your achievements to Instagram, flowing in every studio and sipping Kombucha behind the front desk in Eastown.

DANI

Hello!Interns Dani

My name is Danielle Starkey and I am an Advertising & Public Relations major with a double minor in Writing and Public/Nonprofit Administration and a Certificate in Intercultural Competency. Having completed my second year at Grand Valley State University, I will be transferring to DePaul University in Chicago this fall to finish my degree and pursue a career in the fashion PR industry.

As someone who lives with Crohn’s Disease and strives to live as healthy as possible, yoga has been instrumental in my progress and I’m PUMPED to be interning for Funky Buddha this summer!

I’m a slam poet, musician and writer, and I split my time between performing shows, flowing in-studio, creating content for both Funky Buddha and my lifestyle blog, and running around Donkey Taqueria as a support staff member.

Catch me this summer as I chronicle must-see moments on Snapchat, write for our newsletter and refine my practice with all of you!

Spring Cleaning – Funky Buddha Style

By General, Yoga

April showers bring May flowers…

and a sudden urge to clean up – your body, your diet, your routine, your house!

spring cleaning jane steeleJane Steele, fellow Funky Buddha Yogi, professional maven of organization and cleanliness, and owner of Oh So Clean, has shared some of her rockin’ (and practical) spring cleaning advice with us:

Dear Funky Buddhas,

I am here to tell you that you should NOT feel overwhelmed by spring cleaning. You have all of the tools you need right in front of you.

Before we even discuss ACTUAL cleaning or strategy, there are a few ground rules that we need to discuss:

1. Do not purchase anything for your spring cleaning session! Often people, when they feel a good spring cleaning coming on, run to the nearest store to buy new throw pillows and blankets, air fresheners, and a Real Simple magazine. It never fails. I have said it before, and I will say it again: NO cleaning or organizing session begins with a shopping trip! Hastily-made decisions over purchases from Target or Home Goods usually result in excess throw pillows . . . and a house that is still not “spring ready.” In case you did not hear me the first time – NO PRE-CLEANING SHOPPING SPREE.

oh so clean spring cleaning2. Do not overthink spring cleaning! I want you to know that even if you do not clean your house regularly, it is not magic, and it is not a trick. There is no “right way” to clean. There is, however, a method to the madness – or more like you need Method to control the Madness. Make a simple list, and stick to it.

Do not let your mind wander to some magical spring cleaning land, where they are doing spring cleaning tricks that you will never know about, have never heard about, and will never do. Spring cleaning is not a secret, and it is not hard. It is systematic, and then it is done.

3. Planning is essential for success. Schedule your cleaning, and stick to that schedule! Whether you plan to clean alone or enlist help, it is important to check the weather ahead of time, and schedule your cleaning on a clear, dry day. It will be hard to find energy and motivation if you quickly decide to spring clean your home without preparation. You should not delve into a cleaning project when you are tired, hungry, or unprepared. Plan ahead, and map your plan of attack. Plan an adequate amount of time for this project. Drink plenty of fluids and eat healthy snacks as you go to stay fueled for this rewarding work, and take breaks as needed.

And finally – the list. I have found many spring cleaning checklists, but this list nails it with this practical guide to spring cleaning. I especially love the room-by-room instruction – it helps break it down to an achievable goal.

XO,
Jane Steele / Oh So Clean

Here’s to 2016

By General

A blog post from Funky Buddha Yoga Co-Owner, Chris Reinbold.

Happy New Year to you all! I hope 2016 finds you well. Now, on to some news about us…you are reading our blog after all.

Every January, Grand Rapids Magazine puts out their “Best of GR” list, and this year we find ourselves again awarded “Best Yoga Studio.” This is our sixth consecutive win in various local media outlets.

While it’s been great to be honored, we don’t feel the key to our success lies in the awards we’ve won, it lies in one very big question we ask ourselves. This question not only fuels our work for the upcoming year, it’s the very heart of one of our studio’s Core Values, the value of Continuous Improvement.

So what’s the question? It’s simple: Are we a better hot yoga studio than we were last year at this time?

This past December, we celebrated our 5th anniversary as a studio, and with time comes perspective. We can now look back at the previous Januarys to see where we’ve been and how far we’ve come. We can see the mistakes, the successes, the learning opportunities, and the growth. Then we take a look at the present just as it is.

That’s when we ask ourselves, are we better than last year at this time? Which begs a few other questions.

Based on what metrics? How do we evaluate? According to whom? And we’ve learned no one else can answer these questions for us.

We can look at the numbers, and we do. Memberships and attendance are at record highs compared to last year and the years prior. But, as much as the nerd in me loves numbers and analytics, they paint only a partial picture.

We can look at reviews, and we do. The overwhelming majority of student reviews, social media chatter, and favorable media speak say that we are doing a good job, that our students are happy. No doubt it’s nice to see but not perfectly helpful to us in answering our one big question.

So here’s what we’ve done. The first and best way to answer Are We Better Than Last Year at This Time? is honest self-reflection. The numbers, reviews, accomplishments (or lack thereof) can only serve as supporting evidence, as indicators to a larger picture.

We’re fortunate that we are able to say that all of these indicators have been overwhelmingly positive for our first 5 years, but success can be its own trap. Yes, I just said that and I’ll say it again. Success can be its own trap.

Here’s how.

In the early days of The Funky Buddha, Kerri was leading our team through some changes we’d be making to a class format. In the midst of her presentation, a common question arose. “Why fix, what’s not broken?”

So subtle are the tiny roadblocks to continuous improvement.

Honest self-reflection brought Kerri to the conclusion that we could implement this class better, that we weren’t doing our best, and falling short of all that we were capable of.

Past success does not guarantee future results. Where we think this isn’t true, success has made us blind and drawn us into its trap.

I’ll use our Executive Director, Anna, as an example.

Anna joined our team last August, after seven years of owning a successful multi-location dance studio franchise in Indiana. She’s funny and talented, and we’re fortunate to have her on the team. But here’s where hiring Anna got fun for Kerri and I.

The first assignment we gave her was to spend several weeks picking apart the studio, looking for areas where she thought we could improve. She took us on by practicing her ass off, attending workshops, interacting with our talented staffers, shopped for gear in our retail section, used our website, app, etc.

The majority of proposed improvements she brought back to us already are or are in process of becoming the new normal.

But this is where we get teary eyed…where our hearts swell with pride…..our staff…our team. Because, instead of complaining or questioning or resisting, they’ve been game-on when it comes to embracing improvements. We know this is unique and rare and incredible, the last thing that happens in a typical workplace.

It is a testament to the culture and people that make up the Funky Buddha. It is a testament to the fact that asking If and How we can improve is just how we roll.

Last year alone brought us several new ideas, people and positions that would not have been had we not continued to ask Are We Better Than Last Year? We’ve added an Executive Director, Corporate and Community Ambassador, Marketing Specialist, three additional Staff Teachers (two of whom have been in the grind as former studio owners and just plain happy to be part of a great team), new mentees to our Teacher Mentorship Program, a new Flowtation Class, a Funky Buddha Music Festival, Yoga Alliance Certification as a 200 and 500 hour school of yoga, and Funky Buddha SUP Yoga….plus a shit-ton of other fairy dust we get to sprinkle on our students every day (and they sprinkle on us).

We can’t guarantee continued “Best of GR” awards. Doing so puts the cart way before the horse. But I can guarantee we’ll keep asking our one big question and improving and innovating and looking for how we can be the best yoga studio we can be every day. It’s at the very heart of what we do.

To Continuous Improvement,
Chris

PS – Thanks for voting for us…six times in a row 🙂

Another name added to the Yoga Wall of Fame

Yoga Wall of Fame - 1000+ classes at Funky Buddha Hot Yoga in Grand Rapids

What does 5 years of dedication and 4+ classes a week look like? Jason Miller can tell you – he hit 1,000 classes at Funky Buddha Yoga Hothouse this August!

We are like proud parents—a HUGE congratulations to Jason on this giant feat!! Be sure to give him a high five next time you see him at the Eastown studio (which is often).

We asked the Yoga Wall-of-Famer questions about his practice and any sage wisdom to offer:

When and why did you start coming to Funky Buddha Yoga?
I started on Day 1 with the Funky Buddha… I had noticed the sign for a while before the grand opening and couldn’t wait to try it.

What’s it feel like to hit 1,000 classes?!
It feels great, like something worthwhile. I also believe my Massage clients have benefited from the physical strength and peace of mind I’ve gained doing hot yoga.

What’s your favorite yoga pose?
I love half moon!

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to newbie Funky Buddhas?
The same advice I was givenDon’t quit. It may take a while, but the benefits will come. I’m 20 lbs lighter than when I began and I’d like to think I’m a lot more stable as well.

Congrats x’s a 1,000, Jason!

Happy Birthday

By General

Thanks to our wonderful community and staff we just celebrated a birthday!  Eastown turned 4 years old, Holland turned 2, and Forest Hills turned 1.  A lot has changed over the years…4 years ago in Grand Rapids it was difficult to find a vinyasa class much less a hot yoga studio.  We have mementos around Eastown that remind us of the years gone by…a poster from our opening, a piece of the wall we tore down for our expansion, the cover of Revue Magazine in 2011 among other things.  Any birthday or anniversary always makes you look at years past but also at the future, and we ask ourselves “what am I building now?”  What will I look back and remember from this year, from this time, what am I creating now?

In Grand Rapids at our Eastown or Forest Hills studio or in Holland, the answer for us is the same as its’ always been, the highest quality yoga experience we can provide for our students.  We’ll keep growing and evolving as a studio to offer the absolute best yoga in Grand Rapids and Holland and wherever else we find ourselves.  To another year…Happy Birthday Funky Buddha!
