At the heart of the Funky Buddha are our Core Values – a deliberate and thoughtfully compiled list of ideals by which we operate, live, and create. Our Core Values permeate everything that we do and can be seen in everything from our employee policies to our class formats. Funky Buddha Core Values are at the center of both our student and staff culture. They provide a foundation on which to build excellence, and guide our continuing evolution.
A side benefit of being a business with intentionally formulated and strongly supported Core Values is an increased awareness of displays of excellence in the business community around us, and in Grand Rapids, there is excellence all around us.
This May we are shouting out the kudos to our friends at Field & Fire Café
Funky Buddha Core Values:
- Accessibility
- Quality & Professionalism
- Continuous Improvement
- RICH (Respect, Integrity, Intentionality, Caring, Honesty, Humility) Action
- Service First
Everyone loves Field & Fire, and even if you haven’t visited them at one of their shops (Downtown Market or 820 Monroe), which you should…..you know them….their artisan breads are served at so many of our local eateries that you have most likely consumed their awesome baked goods at some point on your journey of Grand Rapids yum.
Shelby and Julie (the owners) are the dynamic duo responsible for dreaming up Field & Fire, a local bakery/cafe concept where QUALITY reigns supreme. Their niche style of baking is committed to the art and science (Continuous Improvement) of fermentation. Fermentation in baking? Yes. For realz. Skeptical? Curious? Ask for a sample, they love to give samples (Accessibility).
Fermentation in baking is about both flavor and health, making their product both unique and nutritious. Baked in small batches, with meticulous attention to detail and ethical product sourcing (Quality), the bakery magicians at Field & Fire craft all the YUM with contentious consideration of their impact, both locally and globally (RICH Action, Service First). For more info on Shelby and Julie’s passion for fermentation click here.
What started with bread and pastry at the Downtown Market, turned into sandwiches, which morphed into an entire menu of deliciousness (Continuous Improvement), which manifested itself in The Field and Fire Café at 820 Monroe. If you haven’t been. Go. Go now. You are welcome.
Shelby and Julie are most definitely bakery and food nerds, in the very best way, but their obsession with
Quality and Intentionality is not limited to their product, it also extends to the culture of their business. They take their commitment to their community and environment seriously, and that begins and ends with how they cultivate their relationships with their staff, and in turn, their customers. Fantastic, happy, engaged, committed, hard-working staff = A consistently top notch customer experience (Accessibility, Service First).

Shameless Plug:
Every Friday this summer, Field & Fire will be offering a freaking amazing “Speed Lunch” option during our Rooftop Yoga class at 820 Monroe. Yup.
Sunshine Soaked Yoga on a Rooftop + Delicious Nutritious Crazy Good Sandwich + Back to Work in an Hour = What is better than AH-MAZING?!?! Unicorns and Rainbows? It equals Unicorns and Rainbows. Every Friday. Memorial Day through Labor Day. Boom.
We love you Field & Fire. Thanks for bringing awesome to Grand Rapids.
Love,
The Funky Buddha <3
